I first decided to purchase the Rokinon 85mm 1.4 for a number of reasons. More specifically I knew that I needed a telephoto lens that was also good in low light. I stumbled upon the Rokinon 85mm F1.4 Lens for Nikon cameras while I was surfing the internet and I was very impressed. After perusing some excellent reviews of the lens, I figured I would try it out first hand. 2 things that helped seal the deal for me was the low price and the fact that the lens is a Nikon mount. Now having used this lens for a few months I have realized a few items that I’d like to point out.

Pros

  • Sharp lens for such an affordable price: For a $300 lens I was completely surprised by the sharpness of this lens. Side by side this lens is a true competitor to the high-end lenses produced by Nikon.
  • Great in low light: I utilize this lens on my Panasonic GH4 with a Metabones adapter and by doing so I get an alarming amount of light in-camera because this is an F1.4 lens. The DOF you can achieve with this lens when set at F1.4 is insane!

Cons

  • No OIS: Since this lens has no IOS when using it with a Panasonic GH4 (or a similar camera) you have to use with a tripod or monopod to stabilize your video footage. Hand-held videography is almost unusable
  • When using with a lens adapter, distortion can occur: I have used this lens on my Panasonic GH4 with a Vello Adapter and a Metabones Adapter. When I have done this I’ve noticed that the Vello adapter distorted the image really bad.

Why I recommend

I recommend this lens for a number of reasons. Namely, the price is exceptional for a prime lens that can shoot at F1.4. This lens is incredibly sharp and probably one of the best prime lenses I have used with the Panasonic GH4 at a price point of $300. If you are in the market for a 85mm lens, then  be sure to check this bad boy out.
